AWARD OF HONOR

Regional Awards Showcase Design Excellence

“To encourage excellence in architectural design and planning and to provide an avenue through which architects may gain recognition by their peers and the public.  The ultimate goal is to raise the standards of architectural design excellence for both the architectural community and the public.”

The AIA/Northwest and Pacific Region Design Awards Program was held in conjunction with the Regional Conference, “A02 Urban Adventure, Remaking a City” August 7-11 in Tacoma.  The ‘Call for Entries’ solicited projects from Alaska, Hong Kong, Hawaii, Idaho. Montana, Oregon, and Washington.  Submittal categories included residential buildings, office/commercial/retail buildings, education/health care buildings, institutional/civic buildings, renovation/adaptive reuse/preservation, and other buildings and interiors.

The Awards were presented as follows:

Dragonair/CNAC Headquarters

Wong Tung + Partners Ltd.

Integration of significant environmental technology with expressive architectural language; airline metaphor in the roof and how it is held up.

The Stable Building

Adams Mohler Ghillino Architects

Adaptive re-use recovers lost integrity of original building; while adding significant architectural value to the project in response to its new purposes.

Water Pollution Control Lab

Miller Hull Partnership with Sera Architects

Contextual use of materials and details integrating environmental technological solutions.

Woodstock Branch Library

Thomas Hacker Architects Inc.

Remarkable for its outstanding tectonic harmony, from the smallest scale of the details to the basic concept diagram; rigorous but poetic.

Maple Valley Library

Johnston Architects and Cutler Anderson Architects

Subtle poetic response to its wooded setting; from the parking layout, to the configuration of the building, to the detailing and selection of materials.

Birch Residence

Potestio Architects

Well articulated weaving of spaces through the experience of movement (Japanese garden + architectural promenade); outstanding overall harmony in use of architectural elements and response to site.

The Methow Cabin

Precise and restful architectural occupation of a difficult site; multiple view types (framed, and intimate to distant and panoramic), section evolved from its relationship to the landscape.

1310 East Union

Innovative and elegant solution to a commercially difficulty building type; kudos to the client.
